If you have type 4 hair like me, then you already know the edge control struggle.

One minute, your baby hairs are laid to perfection. The next? Flakes. Crunch.

A weird white film that wasn’t there when you left the house.

I’ve tried it all.

I’ve bought the gels that swear “no residue,” used toothbrushes, edge brushes, silk scarves, even prayed over my edges (no shame).

And while some worked okay, I always came back to the same question:

How do you slick down 4C edges without flakes and without turning them into cardboard?

After years of trial, error, and throwing away half-used edge controls, I finally figured out what actually works.

And today I’m sharing it all—step by step, with product recommendations, pro tips, and the exact method I use to get clean, sleek edges every time.

Let’s get into it.

This post includes affiliate links. If you click on a link and purchase something, I may make a commission at no extra cost to you.

Step 1: Start with Clean, Slightly Damp Edges

This is crucial. Edge control doesn’t play well with buildup. If your edges still have old product on them, you’re basically asking for flakes.

Do this:

  • Grab a soft cloth and warm water and gently wipe your edges.
  • Or use a little micellar water on a cotton pad to clean the area without stripping moisture.
  • Let your hair air dry until it’s just slightly damp—not wet.

Don’t apply edge control on soaking wet or bone-dry hair.

Damp is the sweet spot—it helps the product glide on and actually stay.

Step 2: Choose the Right Edge Control (Because They Are NOT All Equal)

When it comes to 4C hair, you need something that has hold, moisture, and won’t flake up the second it dries.

These are my top go-to edge control products:

Start with a small amount.

A little goes a long way.

Step 3: Use the Right Tools (Let Go of the Toothbrush)

Yes, I used to use a toothbrush too.

But switching to an actual edge brush made such a difference in how smooth and defined my edges looked.

What you’ll need:

The right tools give you cleaner lines, less frizz, and better control overall.

Step 4: Swoop and Set Your Edges

Time to style.

Gently pull your baby hairs out using the comb.

Apply a small dab of edge control, then style one section at a time. This helps you control the shape and avoid overusing product.

Styling tips:

  • Start from the center of your hairline and work outwards.
  • Use the brush side to swoop and smooth each section.
  • Don’t rush—edges are a whole mood and deserve attention.

After styling, tie a satin scarf around your edges and leave it on for 10 to 15 minutes. If you have time, leave it on longer for maximum hold.

Step 5: Lock It In with Oil (Optional, But Worth It)

Once your edges are set and dry, you can lightly apply a bit of oil to seal in moisture and add shine.

Try:

This also helps keep your edge control from drying out and flaking later in the day.

What Not to Do

I’ve made all the mistakes so you don’t have to:

  • Don’t reapply edge control over old product. Always wipe it off first or you’ll end up with flakes on flakes.
  • Don’t use harsh alcohol-based gels—they can dry out your hair and cause breakage.
  • Don’t skip the scarf step. It’s what makes everything last and sets your style in place.

Final Thoughts

Slicking down 4C edges is part art, part science. But once you find your rhythm and the right products, it gets easier—and way more fun.

Clean, flake-free edges make every style look more polished, whether you’re wearing a twist-out, puff, or protective style.

I’ve finally found what works for me, and I hope this routine helps you fall in love with yours too. Because when your baby hairs are laid just right, the whole look comes together.

What’s your go-to edge control? I’d love to hear what works for you—drop your faves in the comments.

Thanks for reading—and don’t forget to pin this for your next wash day.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve always found mid-length hair to be that sweet spot—it’s not too long that it gets tangled in every necklace, but it’s not so short that you can’t throw it up in a quick messy bun.

It’s like the Goldilocks zone of hair.

And let’s be honest, there’s just something effortlessly cool about a shoulder-grazing cut that moves with you, frames your face just right, and gives you that little flip when the wind catches it.

For the longest time, I thought mid-length meant playing it safe.

I pictured that one standard lob we all asked for at least once. But girl—I was so wrong.

There are so many ways to rock mid-length hair now, whether you want beachy layers, bold bangs, a blunt cut with edge, or that dreamy, romantic volume that looks straight out of a Pinterest board.

And the best part? Mid-length cuts are ridiculously versatile.

You can curl them, straighten them, braid them, throw in a claw clip, or even experiment with color—without the commitment that comes with longer hair. It’s the kind of haircut that adapts to your vibe and evolves with your style.

So if you’ve been thinking about a hair refresh, or you’re stuck in that “grow-out” stage and unsure what to do next, this post is for you.

I’ve rounded up 23 of the most gorgeous, Pinterest-worthy mid-length haircuts that are trending right now. From soft and feminine to bold and structured, there’s something here for every personality and hair type.

1. Feathered Layers with Curtain Bangs

Umm… can we just take a moment for this blowout?!

This feathered mid-length cut is giving volume for days and those curtain bangs? Literal perfection.

She’s totally pulling it off with that soft, brushed-out finish—it gives this effortless, romantic glam that makes you look like you woke up flawless (we all know it took a round brush and some serious arm work, but hey, worth it).

It’s giving ‘90s supermodel vibes in the best way.

2. Face-Framing Layers with Soft Curtain Bangs

Okayyy, this one is for the girls who want just the right amount of drama.

The soft layering around the face makes the whole cut feel lighter and more flowy, and those curtain bangs??

They add just the right amount of flirtiness without being too “look at me.” The way it shapes her face is soooo flattering—like, she could throw this into a low ponytail and still look like she tried.

Obsessed.

3. Blunt Mid-Length Cut with Curtain Bangs

Omg, I love how this one feels structured and soft at the same time.

The ends are blunt but not harsh, and the way the layers start right at her cheekbones? Chef’s kiss.

It’s giving a cool-girl energy without trying too hard. Plus, curtain bangs on darker hair like this just hit different—they frame her face so beautifully and add a little mystery.

She’s def pulling this off.

4. Layered Mid-Length Cut with Natural Volume

This one feels soooo relaxed and natural, in the best possible way. Like, she just threw on a cardigan, stepped into the sunlight, and boom—goddess.

The layering is super soft, and the volume at the bottom makes it look thick and healthy without being overly styled.

It’s perfect if you want a low-maintenance cut that still looks like you put effort in (even if you didn’t, lol).

5. Short Mid-Length Cut with Side-Swept Bangs

I’m actually obsessed with how clean this haircut looks. It’s shorter than the others, hitting just below the shoulders, and it has that slight inward curve at the ends that gives it a super polished finish.

The side-swept fringe is subtle but sooo effective—it softens everything and adds this elegant, feminine touch.

She looks like she should be starring in a skincare ad, tbh.

6. Textured Lob with Loose Waves

Okayyy Zendaya, always serving.

This is that lived-in lob that somehow looks better the messier it gets. The waves are loose, beachy, and not too “done,” which gives it a super effortless, cool-girl vibe.

The middle part is sleek but casual, and the overall shape makes it easy to flip or tuck behind your ears. Honestly, this haircut just works on everyone.

7. Voluminous Layered Cut with Center Part

Ugh, this one’s a showstopper.

The layers are so bold and voluminous, and that center part keeps the whole look modern and balanced. Her hair has so much body—it almost looks like it’s floating around her shoulders.

This is the kinda haircut you get when you’re ready to step into your confident, main-character energy. She’s totally slaying it.

8. Blowout Layers with Full Fringe

This look is literally giving “retro Barbie goes modern chic” and I’m obsessed. The big, bouncy blowout layers paired with that soft full fringe is just… chef’s kiss.

And the way the ends curl outwards? It’s giving volume and movement without being too over-the-top.

She looks like she’s about to hop into a convertible in the ’70s, but like, in the most glamorous 2025 way.

This would look so cute with a halter dress or even just jeans and hoops.

9. Mid-Length Layers with Wispy Curtain Bangs

Okay, this cut is what happens when flirty meets cool.

Those wispy curtain bangs are everything—they fall just right and blend into the layers so seamlessly.

I love how the ends flip out slightly, it gives the whole thing a little bit of sass without trying too hard.

She’s pulling this off like it’s her signature cut. 10/10 would bring this photo to my next salon visit.

10. Heavy Volume Blowout Layers with Side-Swept Bangs

Umm… HELLO VOLUME?! This mid-length cut is stacked with thick, juicy layers that scream salon fresh.

And that dramatic side-swept bang?

She’s rocking it so well. It’s giving that fresh-out-of-a-K-drama feel where your hair just moves when you walk.

If you’ve got thick hair, this is the one to try. It brings life to your strands and honestly just makes you look like you have your entire life together.

11. Glossy Layers with Center Part

This haircut is so sleek, yet still full of body—it’s literally the best of both worlds. The layers start just below the chin, which helps keep the volume toward the bottom and gives that perfect flipped-out shape. And that center part?

She’s wearing it like a boss. This cut feels super luxe, like she knows she looks good and doesn’t need to say a word.

You can wear this with a power outfit or sweats and still look expensive.

12. Subtle U-Shape Cut with Long Layers

This is that soft girl aesthetic in haircut form. It’s got a very natural U-shape, with the longest layers falling right at the chest, and it’s just sooo flattering.

It frames her face perfectly without being too layered or choppy.

And let’s not ignore how shiny and healthy it looks—she’s definitely been deep conditioning, lol. This is the kind of cut that grows out gracefully, which is always a win.

13. Feathered Layers with Bangs

Okay but like… this cut is adorable. The feathered layers make it super airy and bouncy, and those bangs?!

They’re perfection. Not too heavy, not too piece-y—just right. She’s totally pulling off that classic ‘70s volume without looking dated.

If you’re into playful and flirty vibes, this is such a go-to look. Also looks amazing with gold jewelry, don’t ask me why—it just does.

14. Choppy Layers with Side Bangs

This haircut is for the girls who want edge and softness. It’s full of movement, and those choppy layers give it this undone texture that looks super cool.

The side bangs sweep across so effortlessly, like she just ran her fingers through her hair and walked out the door looking this good.

She’s giving casual elegance and I love it. This one’s so versatile too—curl it, straighten it, leave it wild. It’s a vibe.

15. Long Layered Cut with Airy Curtain Bangs

This cut is so soft and romantic—I honestly gasped a little.

The layers start higher up and cascade down so beautifully, and the curtain bangs??

They’re perfectly wispy and fluttery, like they’re floating around her face. She looks like she belongs in a cozy romance movie, reading books by a window with a latte in hand. It’s giving soft girl energy in the best way.

16. Soft U-Cut with Feathered Ends

This one right here is so classic.

The gentle U-shape at the bottom gives the illusion of fullness, and those feathered ends are just dreamy.

She’s pulling this off with such elegance, like she didn’t even try but still looks flawless. It’s the kind of haircut that grows out really gracefully too, so you won’t be rushing back to the salon every 4 weeks. Low-key obsessed.

17. Modern Shag with Wispy Bangs

Okay, this is the haircut for effortless, tousled volume. The shaggy layers give so much texture, and the bangs?

Just a little piece-y and undone in that cool-girl way. She looks like she listens to vinyls, has a signature perfume, and probably owns vintage boots. It’s messy but intentional—and she’s 1000% pulling it off.

If you want your hair to have a vibe, this is it.

18. Textured Lob with Soft Curtain Bangs

This is that casual-chic kinda cut that goes with literally everything.

The lob length is super wearable, and the soft waves give it a natural bounce. The curtain bangs aren’t too dramatic, just enough to add some shape and flirtiness.

She looks like she could throw this into a claw clip and still look like she walked out of a hair commercial. So simple, so good.

19. Flipped Layers with Middle-Parted Bangs

She’s giving “cool girl in the city” and I’m here for it.

The flipped ends give this fun retro vibe, but the middle-parted bangs keep it current. It’s got movement, volume, and a touch of sass.

Pair it with gold hoops and a strapless dress like she did? Game over. She’s absolutely pulling it off.

20. Blunt Mid-Length Cut with Face-Framing Layers

This cut is super sleek and effortless. The ends are blunt but not too sharp, which keeps it soft, and those long, subtle face-framing layers add that perfect little contour to her features.

She’s glowing and her hair is literally shining. This is the cut you go for when you want to look polished without looking like you tried too hard.

21. Soft Waves with Long Layered Ends

She looks so happy and fresh, and honestly, the haircut is giving light and carefree. The long layers start lower down, so it keeps all the fullness toward the bottom, and those waves? Effortless.

She’s totally glowing from the inside out, and this cut suits her so well. It’s super flattering on literally anyone—like, if you’re not sure what cut to go for, this is always a safe (and stunning) bet.

22. Mid-Length Cut with Tapered Layers and Face-Framing Bangs

Okayyy… this cut?? She’s glowing. It’s super balanced—the layers are tapered in such a subtle way, and they fall so naturally along her jawline. The face-framing bangs give just enough shape without taking over the look, and that smooth texture?? Literal silk.

She looks like she’s walking through an Italian courtyard on a sunny day and knows she looks amazing. She’s pulling this off like it was made for her, no doubt.

23. Long Mid-Length Layers with Soft Curtain Bangs

This one’s the definition of “it girl” hair.

The layers are long and super blended, which gives that full, fluffy finish that everyone’s trying to get on Pinterest right now. And the curtain bangs??

So soft and bouncy, they practically smile with her. She looks effortlessly pretty—like she’s about to post a GRWM on TikTok and we all save it. This cut is trendy but timeless, and she’s totally slaying it.

Don’t forget to save your favorites to Pinterest (you’ll thank yourself when it’s time for your next appointment).

As someone with 4B hair, I know the braid journey can feel like both an art form and an act of self-care.

Until next time — stay moisturized, laid, and looking like that girl.

If you’re on a loc journey, you already know how important it is to keep your hair moisturized — but without dealing with product buildup that dulls your locs and clogs your scalp.

Last week, I already covered a good moisturizing routine for locs – since we’re prone to have dry hair. I even included a schedule chart, so do check it out.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is using thick, greasy oils that coat the hair instead of penetrating it.

This not only attracts lint and dust but also creates that waxy buildup that’s tough to remove.

There are plenty of lightweight, nourishing oils that absorb into your hair and scalp beautifully without causing buildup.

In this post, I’m breaking down the best ones to try (I’ve personally used all of these) — plus how to use them correctly for maximum moisture and shine.

You can find most of these on Amazon, so I’ve included some product links to make things easier for you.

This post includes affiliate links. If you click on a link and purchase something, I may make a commission at no extra cost to you.

What Causes Buildup in Locs?

Before we get into the oils, let’s talk about why the buildup happens.

This is just for your info.

Buildup occurs when heavy products (like thick oils, creams, or waxes) sit on the surface of the hair and never fully absorb.

Over time, these products attract dirt, lint, and sweat — especially if you don’t wash your locs frequently.

And this can make it more difficult to maintain healthy hair.

Now, this is especially common with:

  • Castor oil
  • Shea butter
  • Beeswax
  • Petroleum-based greases
  • Silicones and synthetic additives

These ingredients might be fine for loose natural hair, but for locs, they can become a nightmare.

This is the only reason we’re talking about light-weight oils.

Best Lightweight Oils for Locs (That Won’t Cause Buildup)

Okay, now that you have a clear idea about what NOT to do, let’s discuss good products for your locs.

I’m going to cover lightweight oils that absorb quickly, are easy to wash out, and still nourish your scalp and strands.

1. Fractionated Coconut Oil

Unlike regular coconut oil, which solidifies at room temperature and can be hard to rinse out, fractionated coconut oil (this is my favorite brand) stays liquid and lightweight.

This is why everyone on the internet is talking about it. In tropical countries, it pretty-much stays liquid, but not in the US.

Also, it absorbs quickly, hydrates without being greasy, and has a long shelf life.

It’s a perfect option if you want softness and shine without that heavy, waxy feeling.

It’s also naturally anti-bacterial.

Get it on Amazon

2. Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is technically a wax ester (liquid wax), and it’s the oil that most closely resembles the natural sebum produced by our scalp.

Did you know that? I only learned this recently to be honest.

This means your hair and skin recognize it easily and absorb it without any resistance.

Pretty cool, eh?

It’s incredibly nourishing, non-comedogenic (won’t clog your pores), and ideal for anyone struggling with scalp dryness or flakiness.

It’s also great for scalp health, provides itch relief and I love how lightweight it is.

3. Avocado Oil

Avocado oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, vitamins A, D, and E, and it has a slightly heavier feel — but it still penetrates the hair shaft easily.

It’s ideal for locs that are color-treated, dry, or damaged because it helps restore elasticity and strength.

While it’s not as light as jojoba or grapeseed, it won’t cause buildup if you’re careful with it and use it in moderation.

Balance is key here.

So, to sum up, it’s good for deep nourishment and works brilliantly on dry or brittle locs.

Also, avocado oil adds a nice, soft healthy shine.

4. Grapeseed Oil

This is one of the most underrated oils for locs.

Grapeseed oil is extremely lightweight, packed with antioxidants, and quickly absorbs without leaving a greasy film.

It’s especially good if your scalp tends to get oily but your hair still needs hydration. Grapeseed oil also helps reduce frizz and adds a subtle shine.

It works great for low-porosity hair and it’s high in vitamin E.

5. Sweet Almond Oil

If you want something gentle, nourishing, and rich in vitamins, sweet almond oil is another top choice.

It softens the hair, improves manageability, and absorbs beautifully into the scalp and locs.

It also has anti-inflammatory properties, which is a plus if your scalp gets irritated easily.

It’s got a beautiful light natural scent which I love and it’s amazing for sensitive scalps. It’s also really good for scalp massage.

How to Use Oils on Locs (Without Creating Buildup)

The way you apply oils to your locs matters just as much as the type of oil you use. Here are some tips to make sure your locs get the moisture they need — minus the gunk:

1. Apply to Damp Hair

Use oil right after misting your hair with water or a water-based leave-in. This helps seal in moisture instead of just sitting on dry hair.

2. Use a Scalp Applicator Bottle

To avoid over-oiling, use a pointed nozzle bottle like this to apply a small amount of oil directly to the scalp.

Massage it in gently, then smooth the remaining oil through your locs.

3. Less is More

A few drops go a long way.

If your hair feels greasy or coated, you’ve probably used too much.

4. Clarify Monthly

Even with lightweight oils, occasional buildup can happen.

Use a clarifying shampoo or an apple cider vinegar rinse once a month to give your locs a fresh start.

Final Thoughts

Keeping your locs healthy, soft, and buildup-free doesn’t have to be complicated.

The key is choosing lightweight, natural oils that absorb well and support both your hair and scalp.

Whether you’re maintaining mature locs or caring for a new set, these oils are the perfect foundation for a simple but effective moisturizing routine.

Want more loc care tips? Be sure to check out:

Your locs deserve more than oil.

If you’ve been wondering why your locs still feel dry no matter how much oil you use, you’re not alone.

This is one of the most common problems people with locs have.

Oil does not moisturize.

It took me years to learn this.

It seals in moisture—but if your hair isn’t hydrated to begin with, you’re just locking in dryness.

So what does real moisture look like for locs?

It starts with water.

It continues with a routine. And it depends on the products you use—and how you use them.

In this post, I’ll walk you through the exact steps you need to take to properly moisturize your locs from root to tip.

I’ll also share product links that I personally love and recommend. And I’ll include a Chart/Schedule to help you Moisturize your hair.

Let’s jump into it.

1. Start with Water

The most important and most ignored step, I know.

Locs are thick, dense, and made up of tightly compacted strands.

That makes them very prone to dryness. The foundation of any moisturizing routine is water—plain and simple.

💧 Here’s how to do it right:

  • Use a spray bottle with a fine mist nozzle. I love this one on Amazon—it never clogs and sprays evenly.
  • Fill it with distilled water. Tap water can lead to buildup over time, especially if your water is hard.
  • Lightly mist your hair 2–3 times a week. Focus on your entire loc—root to tip—not just your scalp.

You don’t need to drench your hair. A light, even mist is all it takes to soften the locs and prep them for the next step.

2. Use a Water-Based Leave-In Conditioner

Water alone evaporates fast. To help your locs stay hydrated longer, follow up with a water-based leave-in conditioner.

🧴 Look for:

  • A leave-in where water is the first ingredient
  • Lightweight and non-creamy formulas that won’t cause buildup in locs
  • Natural ingredients like aloe vera juice, rose water, or glycerin

My go-to product is this one. It’s light, smells amazing, and is perfect for anyone with locs or kinky curls.

If you prefer DIY:

  • Mix 1 part aloe vera juice with 2 parts distilled water
  • Add a few drops of essential oil like lavender or tea tree for a soothing touch
  • Pour it into a spray bottle and store in the fridge

Spray your locs with this after water, and massage gently into the strands.

3. Seal in the Moisture with Oil

Now that your locs are hydrated, it’s time to seal it in.

This is where oil comes in—not before.

The goal here is to prevent water loss.

Oils create a barrier that keeps moisture from evaporating too quickly. But you want to choose the right oil for your hair type and climate.

Great oils to use:

Warm a few drops between your palms. Gently press the oil into your locs, especially the ends.

Tip: Don’t rub. Press and squeeze the oil in. Your hair will soak it up more evenly.

4. Don’t Forget Your Scalp

Healthy locs start with a healthy scalp.

Moisturizing your strands without tending to your roots is like watering a plant but ignoring the soil. Your scalp needs just as much love.

Here’s what to do:

  • Lightly mist your scalp with aloe vera juice or your water mix
  • Massage it in with your fingertips (no nails!) for 1–2 minutes
  • If needed, follow up with a drop or two of oil to seal in the hydration

You can also use a scalp massager like this one that stimulates blood flow and encourages growth.

5. Nighttime Protection = Moisture Retention

You might be doing all the right things during the day—but if your nighttime routine isn’t tight, your efforts can unravel overnight.

Before bed:

Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture and rough up your strands. If you don’t like wearing a bonnet, get this silk pillowcase instead—your hair will thank you.

6. Moisture Comes from the Inside, Too

Are you drinking enough water?

It sounds basic, but hydration is a full-body effort.

What you drink affects your scalp, your hair, and your overall moisture balance.

Challenge yourself:

  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Check with your doctor. Since I have gut issues, I have to drink 3L and it was definitely difficult in the beginning.
  • Add fruit-infused water if you find plain water boring
  • Track your intake for a week and notice the difference in your scalp health

Moisturizing your locs isn’t just a task. It’s part of your relationship with your hair.

Be consistent. Be intentional. Use what works for you.

So, what’s in your spray bottle right now?
And is it actually moisturizing—or just sitting on the surface?

Try these steps, experiment with the right products, and give your locs the hydration they truly need.

Here’s the Moisture Chart I Use:

I hope you loved this post!

You want to grow your natural hair fast, I get it.

Shrinkage is real. It doesn’t matter if you have 4A, 4B, or 4C hair.

You’re tired of looking at gimmicky products online and you want to go the natural route.

At one point, I was transitioning from chemical straightening and I needed to grow my hair long since short hair doesn’t suit my face.

In this post, I’ll talk about all the natural ways you can grow your way faster by nourishing your hair from the inside and outside.

If you’re interested in a more natural route, here are supplements to help you with stop losing hair.

I will include some links to Pre-poo oils and hair masks because I’ve actually used these.

This post includes affiliate links. If you click on a link and purchase something, I may make a commission at no extra cost to you.

Now, this may come as a slight disappointment, but there are no hair care products that can actually speed up your hair growth.

However, if you can strengthen your hair follicles then you can reduce breakage and minimize hair damage.

This will ensure that your hair is growing optimally and you won’t get split ends – which will make your hair grow stronger (and technically faster).

1. Keep your hair moisturized

Natural hair is severely prone to dryness – and dry hair detangles and breaks very easily!

This means you need to focus on keeping your hair hydrated so it can retain moisture and be strong.

If your hair is dehydrated, it could be why your hair is taking so long to grow.

For me, this was the issue.

So, the best way to moisturize your hair (so that it’s healthy) is by shampooing and conditioning it with good quality products at least once every 5-7 days.

Oil can add shine to hair and make it feel lubricated but it doesn’t hydrate the hair.

This is a common misconception. It only strengthens the hair follicle from outside so that the wear and tear is less.

So, you’ll need to go in with a styling product that has hold – this will ensure that your hair stays in place without detangling.

I suggest using Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla (Sulfate free) Shampoo and conditioner – this is the best I’ve used so far.

2. Eat rich foods that promote healthy hair

Your hair derives nutrients from the blood directly.

So, if you eat healthy foods that contain good fats and protein, you will actually help boost your hair growth and grow healthy and shiny hair.

Let’s take a good look at some of these foods.

  • Fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are good for helping your hair become shinier. Our body doesn’t produce these, so you can eat these fish to help
  • Vegan and vegetarian options that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids are seaweed, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds
  • Greek yogurt to help you with vitamin B5. Greek yogurt also helps promote more blood flow to the hair
  • Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale contain a lot of vitamin A to help both your scalp and your hair

Incorporating these healthy foods into your diet is the best way to strengthen and nourish your hair follicles from within.

You will notice less breakage and this means your hair will grow healthily.

3. Avoid heat completely!

Any heating tools like hair dryers, curling irons, or straighteners should be avoided.

Not many people know this but high heat changes the shape of your hair’s keratin strands.

Temperatures over 300°F convert the ⍺-keratin to β-keratin, which leads to weaker hair strands that become more brittle and prone to damage.

If you want to grow your hair naturally, please avoid heat as much as possible. I haven’t used a hair tool in years and my hair has never looked better.

If you are going to use heat, make sure you’re using a GOOD heat protector like this one.

4. Do a deep conditioning treatment (at least once a week)

Again, moisture is very important!

Deep conditioning is essential for maintaining healthy, strong hair, which is a key factor in growing natural hair faster.

It restores moisture, reduces breakage, and strengthens the hair shaft, leading to longer, healthier hair.

I highly recommend Shea Moisture Manuka Honey Deep Conditioner (I know I rave about this product in most of my blog posts, and I am a firm believer of sticking to something if it works.)

Additionally, you can also use a Deep Conditioning Cap – A heated cap helps your conditioner penetrate more effectively, giving you salon-quality results at home.

5. Don’t trim every month!

The ends of your hair are the weakest because they are also the oldest. New hair grows from the scalp.

That’s why the tips of your hair usually have split ends and look more brittle than the rest of the hair.

It is very important to get regular trims and just cut the tips of your hair every 4-6 months.

But don’t do this every month – this will counteract the growth!

6. Use protective styles for most of the week

It’s best to keep your hair in a protective style for most of the week.

Maybe for a day or two – you can keep it out.

I suggest box braids or cornrows for the summer.

Protective styles such as braids, twists, and buns minimize manipulation of your hair, which reduces breakage.

Less breakage means longer hair over time. These styles also keep your ends tucked away, protecting them from damage.

7. Use aloe vera gel

I read that a few people who suffer from alopecia use aloe vera gel on their scalp to promote hair growth.

I gave it a try and it genuinely worked for me – that’s why I’m mentioning it in this article.

It really helps soothe the scalp and it does promote hair growth – I like this particular product because it’s not sticky and tacky at all. It’s very smooth and it doesn’t irritate me!

8. Take care of your ends

Your ends are the oldest part of your hair because fresh hair grows from the root and pushes out the rest.

So, be VERY gentle with your ends – focus on moisturizing your ends.

9. Pre-poo your hair with oil

Do this especially if you have textured hair.

I oil my hair once a week and I can honestly say that oiling my hair weekly has strengthened my hair and given it that healthy glow. It has also helped me reduce hair fall and keep my hair soft and shiny.

Here are the oils I love and use:

  • Black Jaimaican Castor Oil to soften your hair: Leave this for at least 1-2 hours before washing off with shampoo
  • Coconut oil (this one works for natural hair) for healthy hair: Coconut hair adds shine and makes your hair stronger
  • Jojoba oil for a healthy scalp: Use this at least once a month to help nourish your scalp

After an hour or two – wash your hair normally with shampoo and then follow up with conditioner.

10. Do a scalp massage (or head massage)

I picked up this head massager outside a Buddhist temple in India but you can also get it online here.

I massage my head for a minute or 2 before sleeping and it not only helps relax you but also stimulates blood flow to your scalp.

I highly recommend it if you have dry hair or your hair needs more nutrition.

11. Do not overwash your hair!

Girlies with natural hair – please heed my advice.

People with straight or wavy hair can get away with it – because their oil manages to move from the roots to the ends much faster than ours.

But curly and kinky hair overdries VERY QUICKLY.

If you have curly/kinky hair, shampoo your hair only once a week to get rid of product buildup.

So, never shampoo your hair every day. Do it only once a week.

When shampooing your hair, don’t rub the shampoo on your hair. Just apply the shampoo to your scalp and when it’s frothing, let the foam wash over the rest of your hair.

Focus on clarifying the scalp as you don’t want too much product buildup there.

12. Use a detangling brush if your hair is matted

Please don’t pull or tug at your hair when you have tangles or your hair is matted.

The more you do this – the more breakage you could have.

Instead, use a detangling brush like the Tangle Teezer and gently detangle your hair after conditioning it in the shower.

Remember to start at the ends and slowly work your way to the top – but if the tangles are very bad – go to a hairdresser immediately (maybe one who specializes in natural hair).

13. Use low-manipulation hairstyles

Constantly manipulating your hair—combing, brushing, or styling—can lead to breakage.

And this will slow down your hair growth drastically.

I know it’s difficult but opt for low-manipulation hairstyles that require minimal styling throughout the week like twist-outs, braid-outs, or a simple bun to keep your hair healthy and growing.

Conclusion

If you feel that you are trying everything possible but your hair looks damaged and weak or it is just not growing, I highly recommend consulting a doctor to see if there are any problems with your health or any underlying deficiencies that are responsible.

I never really cared much about losing hair till I entered my 30s.

After that, I noticed some thinning around the sides and I’ll be frank, it did bother me.

Losing hair can be really stressful.

You’ll start noticing hair dropping on your pillow, in the bathroom and it’s a little scary when you see clumps fall out in the shower.

While genetics and lifestyle play a big role in hair health, your body needs the right nutrients to keep your hair strong and growing.

Even if you eat a balanced diet, you might still be missing some key vitamins and minerals that support healthy hair growth.

That’s where supplements can make a difference.

If your hair is thinning or falling out, these five supplements can help strengthen your strands and prevent further hair loss.

Please check with your doctor if you’re noticing any

1. Biotin

Biotin is one of the most well-known supplements for hair growth.

It helps your body produce keratin, the protein that makes up your hair, skin, and nails. If you have a biotin deficiency, your hair might become weak, brittle, and more prone to shedding.

How to take it: Most hair growth supplements contain 5,000 mcg of biotin, but you can find lower doses if needed. You need to remain consistent—it takes about 3 months to see noticeable results.

This is the one I’m currently using and I love it! : High-Potency Biotin Supplement – 5,000 mcg

2. Collagen

Collagen is the building block of strong, healthy hair – we know this.

But as we age, our bodies produces less collagen, which can lead to thinning and weaker hair.

So, taking a collagen supplement can help strengthen hair follicles and promote thicker, fuller strands.

How to take it: Look for hydrolyzed collagen peptides, which are easier for your body to absorb. Mix it into your coffee, smoothies, or just a glass of water.

This is the best I’ve ever tried: Collagen Peptides Powder – Unflavored & Easy to Mix

3. Iron

If you’re low on iron, your hair might start falling out more than usual.

A lot of women have an iron deficiency. Even my mum went through this.

Iron helps deliver oxygen to your hair follicles, keeping them healthy and promoting growth.

Women, especially those with heavy periods, are more likely to have an iron deficiency without realizing it.

Before supplementing, check your iron levels with a doctor.

Too much iron can be harmful, so only take it if you have a deficiency. Pair it with vitamin C for better absorption.

This is the one I’m currently on: Gentle Iron Supplement – Supports Healthy Hair Growth

4. Zinc

Zinc is essential for hair follicle repair and helps regulate oil production on the scalp.

If your scalp is too oily or too dry, it can lead to hair loss.

A zinc deficiency can also cause hair to become thin and brittle over time.

A daily dose of 10-15 mg of zinc is usually enough to support healthy hair. Where I live, they even promote it in pharmacies.

Try this: Zinc Supplement – Immune & Hair Health Support

5. Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and great for scalp health.

They help nourish hair follicles, reduce dryness, and strengthen hair from within. If you constantly are dealing with issues like dry, brittle hair or an irritated scalp, omega-3s can help bring back moisture and prevent breakage.

It’s a very, very good supplement.

If you don’t eat fatty fish like salmon or sardines often, a fish oil or flaxseed oil supplement can provide the omega-3s your hair needs.

Your hair needs the right nutrients to grow strong and healthy.

If you’ve been struggling with hair loss, adding these supplements to your routine can help support thicker, fuller hair over time.

I hope this post helped you understand what supplements to take!

It’s so frustrating when it feels like your hair just won’t grow.

My friend recently got her hair cut and it was a disaster.

She’d been so eager to grow out her bad haircut. About 2 months later, she was asking me why her hair wasn’t growing.

And that’s why I decided to write this post.

You see other people with long, healthy strands, and meanwhile, your hair stays the same length no matter what you do.

If you’ve been wondering why your hair isn’t growing, this post is for you.

Hair growth isn’t just about genetics.

It does play a part, yes. But it’s not everything.

A lot of everyday habits and lifestyle choices can slow it down without you even realizing it.

If you’ve been struggling to grow your hair past a certain point, one of these reasons might be the culprit.

Please note that this post contains affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, I will make a commission at no extra cost to you.

Let’s dive in!

1. You’re Not Getting Enough Nutrients

Hair growth starts from the inside.

If your body isn’t getting enough vitamins and minerals, your hair won’t have what it needs to grow properly.

Low levels of iron, biotin, zinc, and protein can lead to thinning and slow growth.

It sucks, but it’s the truth.

So, what I suggest is eating more nutrient-rich foods like eggs, nuts, leafy greens, and salmon.

Now, if you’re not able to do this, then consider taking a hair-friendly supplement with biotin and collagen.

This one really helped my friend so it’s tried and tested!

2. You Have Too Much Product Buildup

Heavy styling products, oils, and dry shampoo can build up on your scalp, clogging hair follicles and slowing down growth.

If your scalp isn’t clean, your hair can’t grow properly.

Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to remove buildup.

If you use a lot of styling products, wash your hair more frequently to keep your scalp fresh and clean.

3. You’re Not Trimming Your Hair

It sounds counterintuitive, but split ends can actually prevent hair growth.

What happens is, the split ends rise up and damage the rest of the healthy hair. This slows down hair growth.

When hair becomes damaged, it starts breaking off at the ends, making it seem like it’s not growing at all.

So, please get a trim every 8-12 weeks to prevent split ends from traveling up the hair shaft.

If you want to grow your hair long, ask your stylist for a “dusting” instead of a full trim to keep as much length as possible.

I always tell my hairstylist Shane to cut my hair in such a way that it grows!

4. Your Scalp is Unhealthy

A healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair.

If your scalp is dry, irritated, or full of product buildup, it can slow down hair growth. Conditions like dandruff, psoriasis, or too much oil production can all impact how fast your hair grows.

Give your scalp extra love by massaging it regularly to increase circulation. Use a scalp scrub or tea tree oil to remove buildup and soothe irritation.

Moreover, make sure you keep a check on the foods you’re eating and whether you’re staying hydrated.

5. You’re Using Too Much Heat

Heat styling damages the hair shaft, making it weaker and more prone to breakage.

If your hair keeps breaking off, it will never get longer, no matter how fast it grows.

Try to air dry your hair as much as possible and use heat tools only when necessary. When you do use them, always apply a heat protectant spray to minimize damage.

This is the only one that has actually worked for my hair.

6. You’re Washing Your Hair Too Often

Aye, a mistake I used to make so much before!

I lived in a tropical city, so I used to wash my hair every day after work.

But I didn’t know how much damage I was causing!

Frequent washing strips your hair of natural oils, which are essential for keeping it strong and moisturized. Dry, brittle hair snaps easily, which makes it seem like it’s not growing.

Try washing your hair every 2-3 days instead of daily.

If your scalp gets oily fast, use a lightweight dry shampoo in between washes.

7. You’re Not Drinking Enough Water

Hydration plays a huge role in hair health.

This is something I tell everyone. It’s so easy to overlook how much water we’re drinking because we’re so preoccupied with work and chores, but please don’t forget to drink water!

If you’re dehydrated, your hair will be dry, brittle, and more likely to break off before it gets a chance to grow long.

Make sure you’re drinking at least 8 glasses of water a day. Eating water-rich foods like cucumbers, watermelon, and oranges can also help keep your hair hydrated from the inside out.

8. You’re Wearing Tight Hairstyles Too Often

Constantly wearing your hair in tight ponytails, buns, or braids puts stress on your hair follicles, leading to breakage and even hair loss over time.

How to fix it: Switch to loose, protective hairstyles that don’t pull on your scalp. Use soft hair ties instead of tight elastics to avoid unnecessary tension.

9. You’re Sleeping on the Wrong Pillowcase

Cotton pillowcases absorb moisture from your hair and create friction while you sleep, leading to dryness and breakage.

How to fix it: Swap your cotton pillowcase for a satin or silk pillowcase to help your hair stay smooth and hydrated overnight.

10. You’re Not Using the Right Hair Products

If you’re using products that contain sulfates, alcohol, or harsh chemicals, they could be stripping your hair of moisture and causing breakage.

How to fix it: Check your hair product labels and avoid anything with sulfates, parabens, or drying alcohols. Look for nourishing ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and keratin instead.

11. Your Hair Growth Cycle is Stuck

Hair goes through different growth phases—and sometimes, it gets stuck in the resting phase, where it doesn’t grow much at all. This can be triggered by stress, hormonal changes, or age.

How to fix it: Reduce stress with meditation, exercise, or better sleep habits. If you suspect a hormonal imbalance, talk to a doctor about possible solutions like supplements or dietary changes.

Hair growth takes time, but with the right care, you can help your hair reach its full potential. Which of these habits do you need to change? Let me know in the comments!
